Purposefully Upleveling Your Packaging and Customer Experience

small business owner packaging order

It’s no secret that everyone loves when a package arrives after an online shopping spree. And I know I’m not the only one that feels like it’s receiving a present from your past self to your present self, feeling as if it’s your birthday all year round!

Those feelings we get is why I know it’s important to put thoughts (and love) in the packages I send out. A thoughtfully packaged product not only makes my brand memorable but also helps me connect with you beyond as my customer.

We all know ordering from a small business is different from ordering from a big-box store’s e-commerce website. And even though as small business owners, we love to go above and beyond with our packaging to show our love and gratitude (seriously, thank you for supporting and uplifting the economy) sometimes, that could mean extra waste.

This is how I reduce waste when packaging while still keeping it memorable

Using reusable or compostable packaging

Ever since I started selling products online, I’ve been committed to finding alternative materials that are more ethical and environmentally friendly. Oodles of Abi Doodles is part of the noissue eco-alliance, a growing community of brands that choose to use circular packaging and are committed to being better together. So, every time I order new packing materials, noissue plants trees in areas in need of reforestation. I use the noissue kraft mailers that are made from recycled materials and have a double-adhesive strip so you can reuse it! It also features water-based ink making it 100% home compostable and recyclable as some inks are not compostable at all. This makes it easier and convenient for anyone given the responsibility to compost it when the time comes.

Making a keepsake

I cannot tell you how many cute boxes, thank you cards, and stickers I keep from packages I’ve opened. I display them around my studio, bedroom, and even bathroom! Beautiful things, after all, are meant to be taken care of! And that’s why It’s important for me to think of the many ways my packaging can be reused by my customers too. And reusing them as is or flaunting them as decor are both wins to me!

Thank-you cards are an awesome way to make a keepsake as they can be displayed as art pieces. I use the noissue cards to hand-write my gratitude on the back of a design I’ve made to encourage using it as a decor. But as it’s digitally printed on FSC-certified paper and printed with earth-friendly inks, it’s 100% recyclable if it’s not your vibe (I hope it is though!).

Even if I’m still in the process of figuring out my way through my sustainability journey and sending certain packages in materials (rigid flat mailers) that aren’t as environmentally friendly so as not to waste current stock. I, alongside the Eco-Alliance, believe that small initiatives weigh just as much as big ones. I am still trying my best to commit to a sustainable future to improve social, economic, and environmental wellbeing. And sharing my knowledge and being transparent with my audience hopefully inspires you to follow suit

Aside from what’s mentioned above, I bought a Cricut too, to support my initiatives and goals to continue the efforts of making production more sustainable and efficient without compromising my brand and style.

We’re all in this together! Let’s try to do what we can to take care of our planet and celebrate all it provides every day! Whether by reusing packaging, bringing a tote bag when grocery shopping, or ditching straws—remember, every little bit counts!
